Climate change and environmental sustainability is a matter that affects all our lives.

The Lancet Planetary Health reports that the healthcare sector is responsible for 4-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and in 2019 the carbon footprint of the NHS in England totalled 25 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. The NHS is committing to tackle climate change by reducing its emissions to ‘net zero’. In doing so, the aim is to be the world’s first 'net zero' national health service. The plans for this are laid out in its report Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service .

A significant amount of General Practice’s carbon footprint is produced from prescribing and every practice can play a vital role in reducing the global impact of primary care on climate change.

This webpage is designed to act as a resource hub for practices who wish to improve their own environmental sustainability and impact on planetary health. Various links, information and resources for practices, individual GPs and patients are contained within the tabs.

YORLMC is committed to promoting a sustainable future and being an environmentally responsible organisation. As part of this, YORLMC has developed an environmental pledge and a set of objectives which we plan to work towards. You can view our environmental pledge and objectives here
