Climate change and environmental sustainability is a matter that affects all our lives.

The Lancet Planetary Health reports that the healthcare sector is responsible for 4-5% of global greenhouse gas emissions and in 2019 the carbon footprint of the NHS in England totaled 25 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. This YouTube clip , aired by The Lancet, insists that the medical community must respond to climate change.

On 1 July 2022, the NHS became the first health system in the world to have net zero embedded into legislation, through the Health and Care Act 2022.  The plans underpinning this can be read in this report Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service .The Greener NHS Net Zero Strategy published on 1st October 2020 establishes a goal to be net zero carbon emissions by 2045 at the latest

A significant amount of General Practice’s carbon footprint is produced from prescribing and every practice can play a vital role in reducing the global impact of primary care on climate change.

This webpage is designed to act as a resource hub for GPs and practices who wish to improve their own environmental sustainability and impact on planetary health. Various links, information and resources for practices, individual GPs and patients are contained within the tabs.
